چکیده

A. Agent Hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) is a syndrome of anemia, renal failure and low platelet count, for which there are several causes. Among children, the most common cause of HUS is infection with a Shiga toxin-producing organism, most commonly Escherichia coli O157:H7 or some other strain of enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC). Shigella dysenteriae also produces Shiga toxin and HUS can also occur after infection with this organism.

Is there a shared pathophysiology for thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura and hemolytic-uremic syndrome?

Thrombotic microangiopathy is characterized by microvascular thrombosis coupled with thrombocytopenia, hemolytic anemia, and red blood cell fragmentation. Familiar to nephrologists and hematologists alike, classically associated with thrombotic microangiopathy are the hemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS) and thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP), the histories and presentations of which are clos...

Hemolytic-Uremic Syndrome

Hemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS) is the most common cause of acute renal failure in children and is increasingly recognized in adults.[1, 2] Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP), childhood HUS, and adult HUS differ in their clinical presentations, but these conditions have many common features. Gasser et al first described hemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS) in 1955. In 1988, Wardle described h...

Endothelial Pathology in Thrombotic Microangiopathies

Introduction Thrombotic microangiopathy is a term for a morphologic lesion characterized by platelet and fibrin thrombi involving the microvasculature. The morphologic lesions thus overlap between hemolytic syndrome (HUS), thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP), and the lesions seen in scleroderma and malignant hypertension. HUS/TTP typically involves glomeruli and smaller vessels, whereas s...

Occult systemic malignancy masquerading as thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura - hemolytic uremic syndrome

The occurrence of microangiopathic hemolytic anemia and thrombocytopenia in patients with disseminated malignant disorders has been well documented. However, when systemic malignancy is not clinically apparent, these features may be misdiagnosed as thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura–hemolytic uremic syndrome (TTP-HUS), and patients may be treated with plasma exchange, a procedure with substant...

Pregnancy outcomes after recovery from thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura-hemolytic uremic syndrome.

BACKGROUND Recurrent thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura-hemolytic uremic syndrome (TTP-HUS) during a subsequent pregnancy is an important concern because pregnancy may increase the risk for relapse. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS Outcomes of all pregnancies after recovery from TTP-HUS in the Oklahoma TTP-HUS Registry, a cohort of 301 consecutive patients during the period of 1989 through 2003, wer...
